Drive Like an Italian: Italian toll roads

When traveling in Italy by car, the toll road system is often daunting for English-speaking drivers. In fact, it’s actually really easy to use: all you need is a major credit card.

When entering the freeway — autostrarda, denoted by green signage — be sure to use the lane marked biglietto (ticket), as in the photo above.

There are no toll booth operators at this kiosks: just take the ticket that appears when you roll up and makes sure NOT TO LOSE THE TICKET (if you loose the ticket, you are liable to pay for a larger stretch of road than you will have used).

When you exit the freeway, be sure to use the lane marked carte ([credit] cards): inser the ticket into the slot and then the automated screen and voice will ask you for your tessera, in other words, your credit card. All major credits cards are accepted.

It’s that easy! 🙂
